Synopsis:

Sam, fueled by her obsession with the deaths of those close to her, researches ways to contact the dead. She stumbles down a dark internet path, finding a message board with users discussing a house in the mountains that supposedly has some connection to the afterlife. However, no one who has visited the house has ever returned. Left with seemingly no other option as her obsession consumes her, Sam seeks out the house to find out for herself - no matter the consequence.

Heartworm is a game about the memories we keep and the ones we wish we could forget. It marries cinematic fixed camera survival-horror with low-rez, retro 3d graphics, a surreal suburban setting, and a chilling original soundtrack. These features combine with an emotional and psychologically-focused narrative to compose a nostalgia-charged love letter to late 90s genre progenitors Silent Hill, Resident Evil, and Dino Crisis.

so um. a funny story: I stuck here because she was pushing this closet only forward (going behind the closet did nothing), and so, uh, I must have blocked the way? leaving the location > going back didn't help.

Hey! So sorry you got stuck, this demo is old and has some poor design choices - but this spot is actually okay to block off, the real exit is on the other side of the room, there's another shelf you can push to get through

I like this kind of game

Uncommented full gameplay!

I've been following you on Twitter for a while, but I've only just played this alpha demo of Heartworm - and I have to say, stellar job dude. It builds atmosphere, and the composition of the shots with the locked off camera was great. I saw the figure in the window, the book as soon as I entered the garage, the "Do You Remember?" signage with the thunder clap - you funneled the player right through all the important key visuals and plot/character points really well. The text is well written and not too overdone, and I was able to form my own idea of what the basement full of VHS tapes really represented - I felt invested in the main character and am excited to see what's to come. :D

This is awesome, flawless execution. Keep up the amazing work :)

This game has potential.  I can't wait to see what sort of enemies appear in the final version.

This was VERY interesting! I can't wait for more!

(+1)

I loved the experience! Your game definitely gives me Resident Evil and Silent Hill vibes. I really enjoyed the puzzles and can't wait for the final game. :)

(+1)

Of all the fixed camera PSX style games I've played so far this one I think nails it the most. The gameplay and visuals are top notch, the story is intriguing and honestly I can't wait for more! My only complaint really was that the ending monologue was a little difficult to understand.

😊👍

Really enjoyed this game, good work :)

(+1)

Very good game. very unique and the soundtrack scares the freak out of me. I've play this in a 3 scary games video, gameplay starts at 12:40

(+1)

Very interesting demo! The visual style stands out and the gameplay works well. Definitely going to keep my eyes peeled for more.

(+1)

Great demo! Looking forward to the full game!

(+1)

10/10 game! it really gives the style of a puppet combo game (ps1, retro, mystery and just in generally a pleasant game!) the songs is so catchy it gets stuck in your head for awhile and the story, puzzles and adventure makes you more intrigued and lures you back to the computer to continue playing!

(1 edit) (+1)

Workable exploration-focused Silent-Hill-alike drowning in 'flavour text', without providing motivation for the player or, really, the character to continue. Nice shaders, slightly creepy staging, character is well-modelled and gets around sufficiently well. A couple of very slight 'puzzles'. This delivers the affect of something like Silent Hill but currently lacks a compelling incentive to continue.

Added to our indie games list on Fixed Camera Appreciation Society!

I just finished playing the demo version and it's so promising ! It's gonna be hard to wait before the full game gets released :-p I really enjoyed the music and the care given to the written documents. The art direction is great too !

Interesting, bravo!

Great writing, visuals and sound effects. Amazing music, I really liked the Garage background music. This game really brought the nostalgia for old console games.

The controls are very nice, and the fact that you've implemented the backwards walking is great. Good effort. Animations are nice too.

Moveable objects are (probably deliberately) made a bit more "pale" compared to non-moveable, which is a fun touch if is on purpose.

Suggestion: please, while interacting, make Spacebar not instantly skip the line of text, but finish it instead.
Sometimes text moves a bit too slow, or I skip the text accidentally.

Found possible error: while moving shelves you can trigger the animation while moving orthogonally to the pushing path.

Found this demo among others in Haunted PS1 Disc.
Great demo, can't wait for the updates.

Thanks for your kind words and feedback! I agree with many of your concerns, and most of them have been addressed in the current version I'm working on. Looking forward to sharing more soon!

💀HEARTWORM 💀 | SILENT HILL STYLE| | Survival Horror|-🎮Indie Game📺 (Español Argento)

Played Heartworm on stream as part of the Haunted Demo Disc. First game played! My thoughts at the end of the section.

(+1)

I love the look and feeling. I think the art direction is good. I think one of the camera angles in the game was really nice as it makes you see what it wants you to see so that you can progress through the game and when games are done like that, it’s good.

I felt the game was really easy. It was really a fetch quest sort of thing but I like that stuff.

I don’t know what the game is about or why the main character just took the tape without opening the door to try and see who left it.

When I got to a certain point of the game I was afraid that it would be the end of the game cause it had only been like 15 minutes and then it was over. I’m interested in the final product if there ever is one.

(+1)

Thank you! I really appreciate your feedback. I am working on a full version and hope to flesh out the gameplay a bit so it's more than just fetching items!

(+1)

Really good work. I remembered the feelings playing Resident Evil for first time.

(+1)

I really loved the feel of this game. I could totally feel the Silent Hill influences in it, this is definitely something I'm gonna keep an eye on!

(1 edit) (+1)

I made an account just to tell you I think you did an amazing job so far.  I am one of the target audience, I grew up playing these games and you NAILED the feel.  It would be a shame not to see this through! There is an appetite for this genre that is deeply unfulfilled right now, so keep at it.

Thank you so much! It really means a lot to me. I'm very intent on seeing it through and work towards it every day, and hopefully one day I'll add one more entry from this severely underappreciated genre into the world.

(+1)

Loved the feel of this game, the creepy mystery story.

(+1)

Amazing game. I found some bugs. Otherwise, I'm excited to see more.

(+1)

Demo Disc player here, loved the demo and hope to see more. The music that plays in the house is so RE1 it was giving me flashbacks. Hope to see a finished product with a more fleshed out inventory screen.

(+1)

Good start. I'd like to see a full game. Still working on this?

(1 edit)

Thanks so much. I loved the playthrough and thought you made some valid points. I'm still working on it! Slow but steady.

that opening, man... she put up mental obstacles just because of a video tape and at the end of the strange "dream" she watches it. it's so simple but so genius. i'm greatly looking forward to what comes next.

p.s. am i detecting a little bit of heather mason snark in sam's internal monologue? if that's the case, then i'm in love with her. if not, i encourage you to write it in a bit.

(+1)

Thank you! I was thinking about the Heather comment and I didn't intentionally do so but I think Heather is subconsciously a big inspiration for the character. SH3 is one of my favorites

(+1)

Just played this game in the demo disc... it's really excellent. I really hope you keep at this game - I love classic RE and you have that formula nailed down.

(+1)

hi! i played your game from the haunted ps1 disc and wanted to thank you personally for making a game that felt really intuitive and perfectly mysterious. i did a recording, and wanted to share. cheers!

(+2)

I'm all about this. This has so much potential to be a huge hit, especially with old school RE and Silent Hill fans. Excellent work Vincent!

(2 edits) (+2)

The original resident evil and silent hill games came a bit before my time, so I'm not as used to the controls as much of this game's audience likely is. That being said, I understand that these controls help bring make this game like those games, and could be a something that could potentially draw in a lot of fans of the original silent hill and resident evil games. However, I think that maybe if there was an option to use the mouse to turn instead of a and d, it would be more comfortable to non-veterans of the genre. As of writing this comment, I have not yet finished, and i'm sure that i'll adjust as a play more, but I just wanted to put this out there, as I'm sure a lot of the people here are already use to this control scheme.

(PS, I really liked what I've played so far)

*Edit: I have beaten the game and over time it did get a bit better to control however I think my original point still stands

**Edit edit: my original point definitely still stands, I started walking funny after playing this

A little late on my part but I really appreciate your feedback and wanted you to know I have been considering alternatives. Unfortunately with the way the game is designed, using the fixed cameras and all, I feel if I were to give the player the option to free look it would take away significantly from the style and atmosphere. I very meticulously place the camera shots for a number of reasons. Some purely for aesthetics, and others to guide the player's attention and progression. If I can come up with an alternative control option I'll definitely consider it, but I very much don't want this game to be a third person shooter. I know that seems stubborn, and how frustrating this control style can be, but I hope you understand.

I totally respect that decision. I think fixed camera is a really interesting component. The camera is located in areas that direct your attention towards the focus and it adds a certain cinematic element to the game that works out in a really cool way.  I like the fixed camera I was just thinking if there was an option to move towards the mouse instead of A and D, however I don't have any experience making 3D games, so I'm not sure if this interferes with the camera

(+1)

I'd love to play a full version of this game, it feels just like how the old Silent Hill and Resident Evil games played.

@vincent adinolfi Does this game have tank controls? Just wondering.

yes

ok but i asked the game dev. thanks anyways random person.

Survival Horror для русских пацанов!!!!

Played the demo as part of my Demo Disc Let's Play series (this game starts at 11:55), I love the visual style and the story makes one attached to the depressed main character. I hope everything will turn out well for Sam.

Played the demo, loved the atmosphere, the tank controls, the music, the puzzles and mystery behind everything, well done, looking forward to see more!
